Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
